Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was raised by both her maternal grandparents and mother. The only child she has. Scott went to an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two other job. She planned on becoming a teacher of English at a secondary school. She was unable to fulfill the dream after three years of studying and working as a teaching assistant, she quit college. A poet by trade, she began performing at live poetry recitals. Later, she joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create a group. You Got Me was co-written by the two. Her first public appearance was in the midst of a Roots Show. Then, she began collaboration with other musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. During the Canada tour for the Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experience performing. She signed as the label's first artist.
